Urban Furniture - Tanguy Matériaux

The company Tanguy Matériaux makes urban public outdoor wooden furniture. The aim was to make their range evolve to a more contemporary design. I offered to design public indoor furniture, for schools, commercial centers, hallways...

There are numerous advantages of making indoor furniture - more particularly because the designer does not need to focus on some issues very specific to outdoor furniture like the question of moisture which dilates the wood. It gave me then the occasion to explore the principle of modularity. The central backrest of the bench slightly sticks out in order to signal its modularity - it can be switched and used as a side table, a deckchair, or as a stool which can be useful if you want to take distance from neighbours next to you. These backrests limit the access from behind, which reduces the risk of robbery. Visually impaired people can then detect the furniture with their sticks because the bulk is delimited.
